Alice Rawsthorn – Design as an Attitude

Design is one of the most powerful forces in our lives – and it has never been more exciting. At a time when so many aspects of our lives are changing at a relentless speed on an unprecedented scale, design is increasingly seen as a way to help us benefit from the opportunities created by those changes (and to avoid their dangers).

Design is responding to an age of intense economic, political and ecological instability with resourcefulness and creativity. Public interest is soaring as a new generation of designers is using advanced technologies to pursue their political and environmental objectives in increasingly ambitious projects, as well as to reinvent the objects and spaces we use every day.

Alice Rawsthorn, award-winning design critic, demystifies the field, exploring the most dynamic developments in contemporary design and assessing their impact on our lives now and in the future. From book-making to social design, from the craft revival to design’s gender politics, she offers a comprehensive survey of design today.

Specsavers Eyewear Design Competition

  • Specsavers are looking for designs that shout style but that are also wearable. They should encourage people to wear their specs with pride and help the wearer to express their individuality. They can be of any colour and pattern, or you might prefer something simpler where the shape does the talking.
  • Wherever your imagination leads you, remember, they also have to be practical, functional and able to be manufactured.
  • The end products can be made out of a range of materials that include acetate, stainless steel, nickel, silver or titanium, cellulose proprionate or grilamide (nylon).
  • But if that sounds a bit daunting, don’t worry: the finalists will work closely with an eyewear designer and product developer to bring their designs to life to ensure that they comply with optical industry standards.
  • You should produce a minimum of two different designs and a maximum of six – obviously the more you submit, the more the judges are likely to see something that they love! Specsavers would also like you to come up with a name for the new eyewear collection.

The Prize

  • Each winner will receive a cash prize of £2,000, as well as having their design or designs manufactured and professionally photographed.
  • One overall winner, who most impressed the judges at interview, will also be flown out to the Far East, all expenses paid, to see their designs being made.
