BRICKS + MORTAR | An exhibition showcasing UWE BA Hons Graphic Design student work on the housing crisis

BRICKS + MORTAR
It’s Free!
14:00 – 18:30
18th November
The Vestibules,
Bristol City Hall,
College Green,
BS1 5TR

In 1919, the government created the Addison Act, a move that made individual housing needs a national responsibility and aimed to provide good quality housing for working people. 100 years on in 2019 the state of our housing is not only a national crisis, but a national scandal. The abject failure of our government to provide affordable housing for everyone has led to a country where the value of the UK’s private rental sector is greater than the GDP’s of over 100countries around the world. It is a speculative and out of control business. Our city Bristol is particularlyaffected. Inflated property prices and rents, an acute housing shortage and lack of investment has led to the increased displacement of citizens and a sense of loss of community. On November the 11th, between 10am and 3pm, Bristol will be reminded of the dire situation it finds itself in as the third year BA Hons Graphic Design students take to the streets to express our collective distain. Our intention is to make visible the extent of the housing crisis across Bristol and more broadly the UK, showing we are no longer happy for the politics of our property to be left for the market to decide.

Please come and join us at The Vestibules (Bristol City Hall) on Monday the 18th of November, where an exhibition showcasing the documentation of our actions will take place.

With thanks to artists and designers Ben Thomas, Sandy Suffield and Laura Mortimer; Paul Smith from Bristol City Council; Melissa Mean from Knowle West Media Centre; Aidan Cassidy member of Acorn and Dawn Dyer from Bristol Central Library and Artspace Lifespace. Special thanks to Fenner Paper for their paper sponsorship. Project developed by Conway and Young and Colum Leith in their roles as Senior Lecturers on the UWE Graphic Design BA.

They Live: A Visual and Cultural Awakening | Craig Oldham

Talk, Q&A and Book Signing

Wednesday 27th November 2019
Arnolfini, Bristol
7-9pm
£15.00 full price / £13.00 concessions

Join the Arnolfini for a night of 80s counterculture, visual reference and northern humour with Craig Oldham and radical publisher, Rough Trade Books.

Craig is back in Bristol to mark the launch of this latest project – They Live: A Visual and Cultural Awakening. Paying homage to the iconic science-fiction film, his book represents a visual celebration of this cult classic.

Designed as a perfect replica prop from the film’s synonymous news stand aesthetic, Craig touches on its many themes that are as relevant now as they were then. Politics, art, music, comics, typography, literature, philosophy and film – They Live represents a window into our ever-changing times. With a backdrop of Extinction Rebellion and Brexit, cultural commentators such as street artist Shepard Fairey, explore the film’s influence and impact on our increasingly activist creative community as well as its relevance to us socially, culturally, and politically.

Videos By The Many | Momentum

During the 2017 election, 1 in 3 people saw a Momentum video. These videos helped beat the right wing media and overturn the Tories’ majority – but to win this election, we need to go bigger.

Today we’re launching Videos By The Many – a network of people ready to get behind the camera and make videos to persuade people to vote Labour. Whether you’ve got professional video equipment or just a trusty smartphone, you can be a key part of our election-winning video team. Join our strategy call with Ken Loach at 7pm tomorrow to find out more!

We know that social media platforms – from Instagram to Facebook to TikTok – prioritise video content over other kinds of posts. It’s these videos that persuade voters and shape major political campaigns.

We also know that people are more likely to be persuaded by people who look and sound like themselves, and that people trust voices from their local communities – whether it’s a nurse, shopkeeper or teacher.

Together, we can tell powerful stories about why we’re backing Labour in this election. Join our call tomorrow night to find out more!

Count me in

Anyone with a smartphone can find and film these stories, and all of us have social networks with reach well beyond just Labour voters. Even a selfie video could swing the vote of people you know in this election, and if thousands of us take part, we can get Jeremy Corbyn into Number 10.

Let’s go!

In solidarity,

Team Momentum
