Let Us Coexist – Save Hamilton House

LET US COEXIST – SAVE HAMILTON HOUSE
Public Demonstration
Wednesday 26th September 2018
Assemble at 5.30pm @ Hamilton House, Stokes Croft, Bristol

Coexist, the social enterprise which has built the community at Hamilton House in Stokes Croft, Bristol – for the last 10 years, were told at the start of September 2018 that the landlords Connolly & Callaghan (C&C) would not renew their lease beyond 30th September 2018. This comes as a devastating blow to the hundreds of groups who rely on Hamilton House as an affordable space to work, organise, collaborate and socialise. The impact of losing this community space will be felt throughout Bristol and beyond.

We, the network of community groups that use Hamilton House call on landlords Connolly and Callaghan (C&C) to come back to the negotiating table.

We are artists, we are entrepreneurs, we are dancers, puppeteers, theatre-makers, festival organisers, asylum seekers; we are charities, teachers, start-ups, poets, incubators, activists, music producers; we are fighting for a brighter future.

We are inclusive, we are diverse, we are united.

Strangers As Collaborators

Lunchtime Talks at the Pervasive Media Studio

Lunchtime Talks are a series of informal presentations at Watershed’s Pervasive Media Studio. They normally take place at 13:00 on a Friday, are free and are open to everybody who is interested in what they do. Come along, bring a sandwich, and get to know more about the Studio community, current and up-coming projects, or residents’ work.

Glen Walton is a multidisciplinary artist currently visiting the studio from Melbourne, Australia. He creates interactive installations that invite the public to become musical collaborators. Glen comes from a more traditional theatre, comedy and music background so it has been a strange and winding path that has led him to his current exploration of experimental digital instruments and collective musical play.

In this talk he will discuss, play in public spaces and the development of work that embraces the spirit of DIY. Glen will also discuss findings from his recent Masters thesis which identifies ways to encourage the journey from ‘observer’ to ‘participant’ within public installations. Oh, and there will be some hands-on demos as well!

The Pervasive Media Studio is located within the Watershed building. Let us know if you’d like a tour and we’ll be happy to show you around. Send an email to studio@watershed.co.uk.

Exhibition: Visible Girls: Revisited

The lives, tribes and spirit of British women

Exhibition Preview and Launch event 6pm – 8pm Thursday 6th September 2018 at the Trinity Centre

(exhibition continues daily until Thursday 4th October)

In 1981, photographer Anita Corbin captured pivotal “coming of age” moments in the life of 56 young women – all members of different subcultural tribes: Skins, Mods, Punks, Rockabillies, New Romantics, Rastas and young lesbians. The result was an extraordinary collection of double portraits that represented sisterhood, friendship, belief and allegiance against a potent backdrop of heightened social, cultural and political change in ’80s Britain.

36 years on Corbin wondered:  what happened to all those women who were so dedicated to their subcultural tribes? What became of their dreams and beliefs? Supported by Arts Council England, Anita has re-photographed most of the original girls using new digital technology, creating a set of images that will sit alongside the originals in this touring exhibition.  It also incorporates original tape recordings with some of the girls made in 1981.

This powerful exhibition brings together two eras of a woman’s life, interweaving societal changes, women’s rights, identity and the question we all ask ourselves at some point in our lives: ‘who am I really?’

Artist Talk: 7pm Tuesday 18 September

In conversation with Squasher, Visible Girl living in Bristol and artist Anita Corbin, Photographer talking together about making these iconic Subcultural images originally in 1981 and in 2017 for the Revisited Series.
