RSA Students Award 2021 – Hacked!

We are pleased to announce that our students Izzy Tippins, Ella Coldray (Watson), Jared Appleton won the RSA students award 2021 for the brief “Bridging the Divide”.

Hacked! is a board game for 8 -11 year olds that educates and informs youth on the ways algorithms can shape our everyday lives, and how to combat them.

This is how they describe the project: Youth are increasingly online and consuming content on the internet from a young age with little understanding of how algorithms shape their experience of social media platforms. Hacked! is an educational board game with an accompanying teacher pack that can educate young children (8-11) on what algorithms are, how they work and how they affect the information we consume. The game is designed to be an interactive, collaborative and fun approach to unpacking the topic of misinformation and can be used to supplement existing curriculums on internet safety and digital literacy.

Well done again!

Lottie Johnson wins City ID Award | Outstanding Design Process 2020

The City ID Award for Outstanding Design Process is presented to the Graphic Design student who has demonstrated a robust design process throughout their final project to achieve an exceptional body of work.

This year’s winner is Lottie Johnson who receives an award and £500 prize money.

Cal Jepps of City ID had this to say:

“The standard of work produced this year was amazing, especially in the wake of such unusual circumstances, so all the shortlisted students should be extremely proud of what they have accomplished.

The decision was not an easy one to make, but we felt like Lottie’s exploration of the subject and her evaluation were both really strong, and she ticked all the criteria boxes we were looking for. We were torn between a number of students as they all tackled very different project topics with some beautiful outputs – ultimately Lottie just had that little bit extra in documenting her process fantastically well.”

The announcement was made to Lottie online by City ID attended by course leader Colum Leith and Lottie’s 3rd year tutor Carol Stevens.

City ID are a Bristol based design agency that develop unique design, information and wayfinding solutions globally to integrate people, movement and places.

Alumnus Stacey Olika is named as one of Bristol’s 24 most inspiring people under 24 | 2019

Stacey Olika

This year’s list at Rife magazine features another round of the city’s most impressive young people.

The nominations for this list came flooding in from day one of the launch and didn’t stop coming until the deadline. With the help of the young people we work with at Rife, we managed to whittle down tens upon tens of nominations to the final list and it definitely wasn’t easy. From swimmers to app developers, each and every one of these Bristolian or Bristol-based entries were jaw-dropping. Stacey Olika, an alumnus from the UWE BA Graphic Design course is one of those people – congratulations!

Stacey is a graphic designer, creative producer and curator. Her work explores how identity and culture is navigated in today’s society through a range of mediums. She has  co-curated Why Are We Not Here for Test Space at Spike Open Studios which addresses issues regarding the lack of representation in arts institutions, is a featured artist at Rising Artsand has recently facilitated a new publication, Conversations About Race, to generate much needed conversations in the city. She is the founder of Agents of Change, a programme to shine light on emerging creatives. She recently led the Uncomfortable Truths project at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery.

She says, “To be honest I didn’t expect it at all, I never expect recognition because I’m doing something I’m passionate about and I love. But the fact that people see what I’m doing and it’s influential, is greater than where I ever saw myself going.”
