The idea
Creative Roots is about celebrating two creatives who began their respective careers here in the Southwest, either in work or education and have travelled around the globe to make their mark. It’s an opportunity to welcome them back, hear their stories and learn about their journeys along the way.

The speakers
We’re delighted to be joined by Cat How and Lisa Smith, both doing great work in the industry and flying the flag for Bristol and Bath.

The social
We’ll be enjoying a few drinks and some tasty pizzas from our friends at Pizzarova before and after the talks, so fingers crossed for sunshine.

Cat How – Founder & Executive Creative DirectorHow&How

Cat studied at the University of Bristol and Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design. She has worked as a journalist for The Guardian, The Observer, Metro, the BBC and Computer Arts Magazine, as a graphic designer in agencies around the world, and as a founder and entrepreneur.

Cat and husband, Rog How cofounded How&How in summer 2020. She has spoken on design, entrepreneurship and creativity at Web Summit, World Economic Forum as part of the UN Global Compact (Davos), and at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design and the London College of Communication. She has also been a judge on Design Week and is a branding mentor for Women in Tech and the GetSet startups, supporting with pro-bono work through How&How as part of their GetSet climate-tech initiative.

Lisa Smith – Global Executive Creative Director, Jones Knowles Richie (JKR)

With over 20 years experience in the design business, Lisa is best known for transforming some of the world’s most-loved brands. Recently, she led the global rebrand for Burger King at JKR, using design to help improve quality and taste perceptions across the full brand experience. Lisa was also ECD of Chobani where she oversaw a transformational rebrand and Head of Design at Wolff Olins NY where she created ground-breaking and commercially successful work for USA Today, Grubhub and The Met.

In 2021, Lisa was named one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People for her role in delivering some of ‘the biggest redesigns of the decade’. She has picked up notable accolades throughout her career including Fast Company’s Rebrand of the Year and a Gold Cannes Lion for Burger King, a Brand Impact Award in Culture for The Met, a Cannes Lions Silver and a Fast Company Innovation by Design Award for the rebrand of USA Today. She has sat as Jury President for Design at Cannes Lions and D&AD.

Day School offers artists a shared studio space alongside monthly education days with guest artists, support and advice for work and careers, and other professional development opportunities, community projects and social occasions.

invited guest artists/professionals are drawn from ebc’s diverse network, and reflect the many different artistic practices represented in the UK. Day School is an inclusive and welcoming environment, and the artists we work with are selected with these values in mind.

the school is both committed to the idea of alternative education as a meaningful response to the current climate of UK arts provision and educational institutions, and the opportunity to see the arts encouraged and thriving in the amazing city of Bristol.

what do participants have access to?

-24/7 access to a shared studio space and desk space (or equivalent), space to be coordinated and set up collaboratively by participants themselves (whole studio space c.39m squared)

-monthly education days (saturday) with invited guest artist/educator (including talks, workshops, crits, 121s, discussions and other group projects). past guests have included harold offeh, kerry campbell, heather peak, bryony gillard, and conway & young.

-studio nights every other monday

-ebc organised additional workshops and projects

-opportunity to contribute peer led workshops/talks/content and to work collaboratively

-much of the school is peer led so there is a real opportunity for all voices to be heard and to help shape the content of our sessions/ideas for invited guests

who is day school for?

Day School is made up of 13/14 participants, who take part in a year long programme.

the Day School might have particular relevance for the following:

-artists/makers/designers/architects/musicians/illustrators/film makers/writers and those engaged in a broad spectrum of arts practice

-those who have been practicing for some time in south west/Bristol, and are looking for fresh ideas or opportunities for community/collaboration

-those new to the south west/Bristol and looking to meet other artists and work within a close knit peer network

-those looking to move to south west/Bristol and get connected into the city as a practitioner

-those who have been excluded from mainstream or postgraduate education because of rising costs or accessibility issues

-those recently graduated and looking to continue with a lighter touch education programme

where is it?

the EBC Day School is situated within the St Anne’s House creative community hub organised by bricks in St Anne’s Bristol and close to Bristol Temple Meads train station (making day school accessible to the wider south west area). the Day School studio sits amongst many other artist studios, social enterprises, and community organisations. participants are able to share in the wider life of the building and bricks programming.


accessibility 

the Day School studio within St Anne’s House is accessible via ramps external to the building, and an internal lift. there are also accessible toilets on the ground floor of the building

ebc is co-directed by artists jack lewdjaw and karanjit panesar

the EBC Day School is coordinated by jack lewdjaw

jack is an artist who has been based in Bristol since 2014. he is a lecturer in fine art at Bristol School of Art as well as having worked as a visiting lecturer to many other organisations. he was a participant of syllabus V; a peer-led alternative learning programme organised by wysing arts centre.

UWE

-full bursary for a UWE undergraduate final year art student (graduating in summer 2022) who has a socially engaged art practice, and a strong commitment to collaboration and community

visual arts southwest (vasw)

-£200 bursary (2 months worth of participation fee) open to any applicant

knowle west media centre (kwmc) tbc 23/24

-full bursary for a participant based in knowle west (BS4) who identifies as from a working class background OR a half bursary for a participant based in south bristol (BS3, BS4, BS13, BS14) who identifies as from a working class background

(In addition they would be interested if this person’s practice is socially engaged/participatory – or they are looking to develop in this area)

ebc time exchange

-for a participant who wants to commit time rather than money, to support ebc for 9 hours per month (most likely over 1/1.5 days, and most likely on a monday) with administration tasks, marketing, and other similar activity

We Design for the Community 2023

We design for the community is a programme supported by the Mayor of London and UWE Bristol. The initiative pairs cultural and community organisations who need communications support with design students. The students help organisations improve their communications strategy under the guidance of design industry professionals. The aim of the programme is to foster a collaborative design process where organisations, designers and students bring expertise, creativity and enthusiasm to develop bespoke solutions together.

The programme is free to take part in and students receive London Living Wage for their consultancy work. The deadline to register your interest is 10am on 15 May 2023. The summer school will take place in London at the University of Greenwich, on 26–30 June 2023. Students have to arrange their own accommodation. Full commitment in person required.

Students from across all years, alumni and belonging to different departments (Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation, Photography, Journalism, etc…) are welcome to apply. Apply! Apply! Apply!

CrossTalk: Creative Talks & Workshops — 18th March 2023

A Free Interactive Day, Exploring the Intersection of Music & Creative Careers

NOODS LEVELS & Bristol Beacon present CrossTalk ‘23: a day of talks and workshops for creatives delivered via cutting edge industry professionals. Over the course of the day, you will gain tangible insights into what’s needed to make a career in the creative sector, develop your practice and hear stories from those who have paved the way for the next generation to build upon.

The Talks

1300 – 1400: The Flight – Building sonic worlds to breathe life into blockbuster games.
1415 – 1515: Grime Stories Q&A with Risky Roadz & Dhelia Snoussi hosted by Tom Koast
1530 – 1630: Victoria Jane (BBC RADIO 1) Carving a career in radio’s competitive industry as an independent artist.
1700 – 1800: Tori West – Building an Art & Fashion Magazine as a Queer and Working Class Person

In collaboration with the Museum of London, Grime Stories Exhibition will be welcomed to Crosstalk 2023 alongside a Q&A with Risky Roadz and the exhibition’s producer Dhelia Snoussi hosted by Tom Koast.

Workshops

– A 2-hour workshop led by Saffron in collaboration with Pioneer DJ’s CIC ‘Start From Scratch’, encouraging and nurturing women, trans, non-binary and GNC DJ’s of the future.

– Aspiring sound technicians will be able to participate in a workshop from Music For Everyone, who will teach you how to successfully set up and run a live stage.

– Innovative software company Rocketmakers, will be holding a workshop for young creatives centred around VR & app development.

As well as talks and workshops there will be a public VR experience, an interactive synth station, and a pop-up studio from Noods Radio, soundtracking the day with some of Bristol’s most cherished young DJ’s.

‘Each May a-n publishes its digital Degree Shows Guide, which celebrates the art and ideas of graduating students from art colleges across the UK. Graduating in 2023? This is your year to get involved.
a-n is looking for works by final year students to include in our Class of 2023 feature, which showcases the most exciting degree shows work and for many graduating students provides their first national exposure.
Wondering what the catch is? There isn’t one. It’s free to apply and we’ve kept the application process as simple as possible. The only rule is that you must be graduating from an undergraduate visual arts course in the UK in 2023.

Type Tuesday: On and off the grid — 7th March 2023

Eye magazine hosts its first Type Tuesday of the year featuring graphic designer Sara De Bondt of Occasional Papers.

Sara De Bondt and Antony Hudek co-founded the independent publishing house Occasional Papers in 2008. Since then, they have published over 30 affordable titles devoted to the histories of design and art, including best-sellers such as The Form of the Book Book and Natural Enemies of Books.

Sara is a graphic designer, PhD-researcher and educator based in Ghent. Her current projects include the design of exhibition graphics for Wellcome Collection, a book for Museo Jumex, a new website for The Showroom and a visual identity for Triennial Brugge. A text from her latest book, Off the Grid: Histories of Belgian graphic design is featured in the latest issue of Eye magazine (Eye 103).

She will share her experiences in designing, editing, writing, publishing and distributing books today.
