‘Together with the team at Google Creative Lab, we’re bringing you a special-edition portfolio review with a focus on creative technology. So if you’re free on Wednesday 7th December and would love to get to know the team and show them your work, apply below!

On Wednesday 7th December, we’ll be hosting a portfolio review for budding creative technologists together with Google Creative Lab – a visionary team at Google made up of interdisciplinary thinkers and doers. We will be joined by five members from the London and New York teams, to connect with fifteen up-and-coming creatives.

• chat to the Google Creative Lab team in a relaxed setting
• get insight on what the team looks for in new talent
• receive one-to-one advice and feedback on your work
• meet inspiring fellow emerging creatives

Who can apply?
This portfolio review is open to technically-minded creatives from a wide range of disciplines. There are 15 places on offer for budding hacker-tinkerers who love coming up with ideas and building tools to make creative concepts a reality.

The world of creative technology is big and broad. So whether you’re a programmer or product designer with a love of prototyping, or an illustrator with a passion for communicating through code, if you’re interested in using technology to push creative boundaries – we want to hear from you!

Justine Kurland SCUMB Manifesto Workshop (14th or 15th Nov)

Photographic artist Justine Kurland will deliver 2 one-day workshops of photography and collage, exploring her initiative – The Society for Cutting Up Men’s Books. This workshop follows her recent photobook – SCUMB MANIFESTO, published by MACK books, 2022.

Inspired by Valerie Solanas’ iconoclastic feminist tract SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) Manifesto, SCUMB Manifesto presents Justine Kurland’s own initiative – the Society for Cutting Up Men’s Books.

‘Collage has long been a feminist strategy in art as in life: hybrid, shape-shifting, multiform, rebellious, irreverent and very funny. The cut is violent but the pasting can be seen as a metaphor for mending, bringing the margins to the center, a revision rife with possibility.’ – Justine Kurland

Join Justine for a day dissecting the pages from existing photo-books to make your own original artwork.

In the morning Justine will invite a group discussion on the books participants have brought to cut and the ways collage might revitalise the materials. Following this, using scalpel and glue, participants will create their own unique collage with hands on assistance and group feed back.

‘For the last several years, I’ve culled my library of canonized white male photographers, men who have taken up to much room psychically and literally, whose work crowd our book shelves, museums, and academies. This workshop is a call to action, inviting others to purge themselves of their man books. Together we will cut and paste as a collective way of dealing with historical inheritance and tradition; not all of which is a gift.’ – Justine Kurland

This workshop will be available on two dates and participants can book onto either 14 NOV or 15 NOV.

Justine will also be delivering an artist talk in the MPF gallery on the evening of 14 NOV and workshop participants are welcome to join this free of charge.

Adfree Cities — Job Vacancy, Arts Organiser

About Adfree Cities
Adfree Cities is a network of ‘Adblock’ groups in UK cities. We build grassroots power to oppose plans for new billboards and showcase community arts, nature and ad-free space as alternatives to corporate outdoor advertising. We lobby for policy change at a local and national level and work with a growing network of allies to raise awareness and reduce the social and environmental harms caused by advertising. In particular, we work closely with the Badvertising campaign to stop adverts fuelling the climate emergency.

About the role
We’re looking for an enthusiastic climate justice campaigner who can see through the spin of major car manufacturers and deploy creative tactics to expose their activities publicly. You’ll keep a watching brief on both the lobbying tactics of car manufacturers and their greenwash advertising, distill key information from civil society reports and media articles and convert them into exciting commissions for artists to respond to. You’ll attend coalition meetings of UK and global groups countering greenwash ads from car and fossil fuel industries, liaise with grassroots activists and artists across Europe – particularly groups in the Adfree Cities network in the UK – and create headline grabbing interventions to stop advertising fuelling the climate emergency.

Primary responsibilities

  • Actively monitor and respond to greenwash advertising, marketing and sponsorships by major polluters in the car industry and fossil fuel industry
  • Attend coalition meetings with allied campaigns both in the UK and internationally to exchange the latest information on lobbying tactics of major car manufacturers and fossil fuel companies
  • Develop, maintain and commission a network of creative visual artists
  • Distill key information about car companies and oil majors into concise briefs for artists
  • Engage relevant regulatory bodies (e.g Advertising Standards Authority, UK Competition & Markets Authority) to take action against misleading greenwash
  • Work with social movement actors in climate networks who are confronting big polluter advertising and sponsorship.

Werkhouse ’22 — Applications Open

Applications for Werkhouse’s 2022 weekend studio experience are now open and close on October 14th

‘Werkhouse is a weekend studio experience for young creatives. It’s designed as a deep dive into the creative and interpersonal skills you need to succeed in a design studio. With 20 design professionals involved, we show participants how to rapidly develop ideas and then communicate concepts to clients. We do this with a project brief, five teams and some real pressure – to be better prepared for what design businesses are really like.

Now in its fifth year, we are on the look out for this years cohort of 18-25yr olds.

For students at university, we welcome participants in their 2nd year and above. However, participants definitely don’t need to have studied design at university or have existing industry connections, Werkhouse is an initiative created with those in mind who might struggle to access opportunities in the creative industries or have chosen a different route to a career in design.

It’s a rare opportunity – outside of highly competitive internships – for students and young creatives to develop industry connections and gain experience of what design businesses are really like.’
