Fanny Wacklin Nilsson

Hej, [hello in Swedish] my name is Fanny Wacklin Nilsson, I graduated from UWE in 2013, and moved shortly after to London working in agencies as a graphic designer, mainly within the the arts and culture sector. Now I work as a digital designer at the branding agency Essen International in Stockholm.

During my time in London I worked on a variety of editorial and branding projects, which triggered my interest for digital, as I learned more of its great potential, and noticed an increasing demand for it within the design community. It resulted in me moving back to my native Stockholm for further studies at the digitally focused school Hyper Island.

Since graduating in 2016 I have been working as a digital designer, focusing on apps, websites as well as other digital applications and services. I enjoy the most when working in multi-disciplinary teams, developing ideas and crafting concepts with my colleagues and the clients. Success for me is when I transform insights into solutions that fit people’s needs and behaviours. I have however not lost the love for print, so to satisfy that outlet I freelance as the designer of a Nordic poetry magazine, published and distributed in Scandinavia.

Rebecca Penmore

Rebecca Penmore is a graphic designer based in London. She graduated from UWE in 2012, before moving to London to join Harry Pearce’s team at Pentagram. Whilst at Pentagram she spent several years working with and learning from many of the leading figures in the design and arts community. Rebecca left Pentagram at the end of 2016 and set up independently.

Working from her studio in Deptford, Rebecca’s approach to design is rooted in research, conceptual exploration and a love of colour. Partnering with a diverse range of clients and collaborators, she is passionate about building lasting and meaningful relationships with like-minded people. Spanning a broad range of subject matter, projects are united by the philosophy that intelligent design has the power to delight, inspire, and enrich society. Her work balances detail and clarity, with warmth and intuition. Current clients include The Royal Academy of Arts, Elephant Healthcare, The RSA and Waitrose.

Alongside her everyday studio practice, Rebecca is part of Eight Years, a research platform co-founded with best-friend and fellow UWE alumni Abbie Vickress. Through workshops, zine-making and experimental interventions, they explore how design can be used for social action.

Oliver Gabe & Ashley Kirby – Focus Group

“Illiterate scum” – The Observer

Oli and Ash began working together during their time on the course. Bonding over a general lack of fundamental Graphic Design skills they decided that by combining their efforts they would have a better chance of ending up with something half decent. These efforts have continued and since graduating in 2015 they have worked as a team at an agency called Kesselskramer and on their own practice Focus Group (it was called One & A Half Studio but this is the new name.)

Their Graphic Design practice helps to fund their true passion in life, bodybuilding. The pair have dedicated hundreds of hours, into improving the sheer mass of their bodies, lifting weights sometimes up to three times a day. They adhere to a very strict diet that they have devised themselves, eating nothing but boiled celery, powdered meat compound and room temperature water. The results have been astonishing (Oliver, 1-rep max bench 200kg) (Ashley, 1-rep max bench 1500kg) with the pair aiming for their first professional competition in spring 2020.

I feel healthier…

Alexander Ward

After graduating UWE I interned for four months at a small marketing agency in London, before being brought on permanently as a Junior Designer. After a stint at another small agency, and two years in London, I caught the travel bug and decided to explore opportunities overseas.

I’ve been working at Ogilvy Sydney as a Designer for almost 2 and a half years now! My specialties have changed in that time, originally brought onboard with a predominantly print and illustration focus, but with knowledge of digital display. Now I’ve found my place in art direction and have been fortunate enough to lead some stellar projects – in 2018, a copywriter and I lead the product relaunch of American Express Platinum for Australia, I directed a fashion photoshoot for H&M which became out of homes in Australia’s Westfield shopping centres, I developed the typography for the logo of the Australian Space Agency, and I illustrated a wall mural for KFC in one of the most bustling parts of Melbourne. We’ve got some exciting projects on the horizon too, so watch this space!

Liam Roberts

Towards the end of my 3rd year at UWE, a branding agency contacted the university as they were looking for a Junior Designer to join their team. I was very lucky to have been given the opportunity and after a couple of weeks interning I was offered a full time position. It was a steep learning curve as there were only five of us in the studio I had to learn a lot, fast. I spent two years working the agency and fast realised that it was better to be a big fish in a small pond, as I got a lot experience behind me quickly and this allowed me to move onto another role with confidence.

I moved to an agency which offered a wider spectrum of design solutions in order to broaden my skills and add a little variety into the work I was doing. Working at the agency I have gone on to be a Senior Designer/Art director. One thing that has always been important to me is that I continue to learn and I’ve gone on to complete courses in video direction, animation, interior design and learning to code in several languages. And, because of the variety of skills I’ve accumulated my job is now incredibly varied from day to day and I believe that’s what’s keeps me fresh and an important member of the team.
