CROSSTALK — An industry day for the next generation of creative pioneers

NOODS LEVELS presents CrossTalk: a day of enriching talks and workshops from well respected professionals in radio, videography and composition, created/produced for young people by young people. Talks from: No Signal Radio, Geoff Barrow (Portishead) & Ashleigh Jadee (Skepta & The Rap Game UK)

Over the course of the day, young people will gain tangible insights into what’s needed to make a career in the creative sector, developing their practice and hearing stories from those who have paved the way for the next generation to build upon.

CrossTalk was developed for young people, by young people, showing that young creatives have a stake – and a place – in the cultivation of Bristol’s creative culture.

CrossTalk will take place on 26th March ‘22 at the Arnolfini, Bristol’s International Centre for Contemporary Arts.

This event was made possible with the help of: Bristol City Council’s Cultural Investment Programme, Vita Coco Infused Drinks & Dr Martens

Marketing Design and Craft in Post-war Britain — Talk

Organised by the Ken Stradling Collection with The Gane Trust and the 20th Century Society, celebrating the exhibition A Lifelong Passion for Design: Ken Stradling at 100 at the Ken Stradling Collection, 48 Park Row.

No internet, no social media, little TV advertising, few specialist magazines – yet somehow this was a time in which design and craft at last reached deeply into Britain’s popular consciousness. This seminar will examine how institutions and enthusiastic retailers like Ken Stradling worked to achieve this. They brought us colour, fun, quality and a real appreciation of design and the craftsman’s art. This is not just history though – their selling skills and understanding of their market still have relevance for both makers and retailers today.

Speakers will look at legendary individuals like Muriel Rose who ran the Little Gallery, Henry Rothschild of Primavera and Ken Stradling at the Bristol Guild. We’ll also explore the influence of significant organisations like the Design and Industries Association, the Design Council and the Crafts Council.

There will be time at the end of the day for a free visit to the exhibition with refreshments at 48 Park Row, specially opened for participants.
Ticket price includes tea and coffee.
The exhibition has been supported by the Heritage National Lottery Fund and the Gane Trust.

In this talk Xavier Aure and Thomas Bale will present their recent work on the development of an automated image-based 3D scanner to record the structure and colour of planar surfaces of artworks. The system is based on the combination of photogrammetric and photometric stereo images and generates high-resolution 2D and 3D data that can be used for documentation, visualisation and public engagement applications. Xavier will present the scanner and some results from the recording of the painting.

Cryptic Landscape — Sarah Rhys

Cryptic Landscape is the title of an exhibition of Sarah’s work at The National Botanic Gardens of Wales. The title evokes the miniature and mysterious botanical worlds of lichen and moss. These organisms are also cryptogams which means their reproduction is often unseen; Linnaeus described this category as like a ‘hidden marriage’. Whereas other plants had stamens and flowering parts and were described as having an ‘open marriage’.

These books of handwork and hybridity remember the body… — Angie Butler

Through studying and working with poets, printers, artists, designers and others across a series of projects in the UK, Europe and the USA, I have identified particular methodologies and methods of application by individual practitioners who use letterpress printing to make their artists’ books. These methods are important to document and establish benchmarks and standards as part of the tradition of good studio practice in an expanding field. A baseline for assessing the physical and psychological relationship of the practitioner to their equipment and the commitment to the practice of letterpress printing within artists’ books practice.
