We are extremely pleased to announce that Seb Lansdowne and Nathaniel Stevens were respectively winner and highly commended for this year’s British Book Design and Production Award in the students’ category. Our most sincere congratulations to both students. Seb Lansdowne winning the award makes this the third UWE student’s victory in the past 4 editions of the award (that was sadly suspended for 1 year because of the Covid19 pandemic).

Seb entered the competition with his book “Monstruous Carbuncle”, a collection of text and visual essays on Brutalism, while Nathaniel’s “A is for Apple” is a journey through all the meanings and cultural references of the apple as an object. Both books were written, designed and produced as part of the Typography and Print module for level 2 students at UWE Bristol Graphic Design BA, with lecturers Marco Ugolini and Gabriel Solomons.

The BBDPA is one of the most prestigious and popular events of the year, promoting the excellence of the British book design and production industry and celebrating the best books of the year in 18 categories. This year’s award ceremony took place on Nov 8th at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London and was conducted by radio and TV presented Penny Smith.

On this mini-site you can see a series animated gifs our current Level 2 students have designed as an outcome of a fast-pace workshop in the last week, inspired on the sentence: “Reasons to be Cheerful”. The students were great at working fast to generate ideas, using animation, typography, live action, few props and other elements to come up with these.

Join the team behind the Bristol Black History Month Magazine on the 20th of October, 7.00pm – 12.00pm!

A fundraising event with music, art and food to celebrate Black culture in Bristol’s hottest new independent venue Strange Brew!

The evening will kick off with traditional Caribbean food provided by Jamaican takeaway Café Conscious, and speeches from guest speakers Amirah Cole and Wish Master. Followed by a curated art exhibition, featuring work from Black Bristol Photographers Rick Thompson and Donavan Jackson, and ending with music from local Black Bristol DJs, DJ Style & MC J.n.R!

We will be celebrating the new exciting 2021 edition of the Bristol Black History Month magazine and new partnership with Cognitive Paths, Punch Records and Cables&Cameras! Our collaboration brings inclusive media focusing around the topics of heritage, talent, knowledge and education to amplify Black voices, culture and lived experience. Our vision is to support and represent Black communities and creatives in Bristol throughout the year, not just in October.

The Periphery is a student project inspired by the work of Stephen Gill, who will be exhibiting at Arnolfini between 16 October-16 January. A collaboration between The School of Art & Design, Arnolfini, and ACE Technical Learning.

Level 2 undergraduate students from Art & Design or Photography are invited to apply to get involved.

Study Stephen Gill’s work and visit his exhibition at Arnolfini (opens Saturday 16th October). Think about Stephen’s concept of ‘the periphery’, and how it might inspire you, or be an imaginative starting point for something new. Make sure you can be available on your Project Day (see details below). Stephen’s idea of the periphery is a starting point that can be interpreted in loads of different ways. E.g. Peripheral vision, margins, edges, liminal spaces, unattended to / undervalued / under-represented…? It’s up to you. Just don’t copy Stephen’s work! He already made it!

Participants will attend a Project Day on Friday 5th November. These days will feature experimental making sessions led by technical staff, also academics and researchers. Materials will be provided for these workshops. Explore new processes and approaches! Make new art work! Work alongside students from other courses! It will be at Bower Ashton. (Times to be confirmed.)

Depending on your programme commitments, participants will also be able to book follow-up time in Fabrication and other technical areas at Bower Ashton during Mon-Weds 8th, 9th, 10th November, to develop your new art work. (Book via Student Project Coordinators: spc@uwe.ac.uk, 01173286886.)

Produce quality documentation of your art work, and process, as you go. We will ask you for high quality images and/or footage of the new work / project that you develop.
